Project Checklist

General tips for getting your home ready for a remodel and living with a project in progress.

Every project and every home is different, so think of this as a starting point. If anything here doesn’t fit your project, or you’re not sure, just ask us. We’d rather explain than have you guess.

Clear the work area

  • Empty cabinets, counters, shelves, and closets in and near the room we’re working on.
  • Take down pictures, mirrors, and decorations from walls in and next to the work area.
  • Move furniture and rugs out of the room, and out of the path between the door and the work area, if you can.
  • Plan how you’ll manage while the room is out of service, for example a temporary spot for a coffee maker and microwave during a kitchen remodel, or using another bathroom.

Protect valuables

  • Put away jewelry, cash, medications, important papers, and anything irreplaceable.
  • Move fragile items away from shared walls; work in one room can cause vibration in the next.
  • Cover or move electronics and keepsakes in nearby rooms where dust may travel.

Pets and kids

  • A work area can have tools, materials, dust, and open doors. Keep children and pets out of it.
  • Let us know about pets so we can keep doors and gates closed, and plan a quiet, safe space for them during work hours.
  • Talk with your kids about staying clear of the work area and the crew’s tools and materials.

Parking, dumpster, and access

  • Talk with us about where work vehicles can park and where a dumpster or materials can go, if your project needs them.
  • Tell us about any HOA, condo association, or township rules that might affect parking, dumpsters, or work hours.
  • Let us know how we’ll get in: who will be home, and whether there’s a key, garage code, or lockbox.
  • Keep the driveway and path to the work area clear on days you know deliveries are coming.

What to expect each day

  • Remodeling brings some noise and dust. We take care of your home and respect your family while we’re there.
  • Different parts of the job may happen on different days, and some days may show less visible progress than others.
  • Ask us anything along the way, including why a certain step has to happen.
